ORDERING RELENZA — HOW TO ORDER RELENZA

Guideline 2: Calculate Number of RELENZA ROTADISKs^® to Order

Is your order for treatment or prevention? RELENZA is administered to the respiratory tract by oral inhalation using the DISKHALER inhaler device. The RELENZA ROTADISK® supplies four 5-mg doses of zanamivir (the active component of RELENZA).[38]

RELENZA for Treatment:
The recommended dosage of RELENZA for treatment of influenza in adults and pediatric patients 7 years of age and older is 2 inhalations (one 5-mg blister per inhalation for a total dose of 10 mg) twice daily (approximately 12 hours apart) for 5 days.
2 inhalations twice daily for 5 days = 5 ROTADISKs[38]

RELENZA for Prevention:
The recommended dose of RELENZA for prevention of influenza in adults and children 5 years of age and older in a household is 10 mg once daily for 10 days and for prevention of influenza in adults and adolescents in a community setting is 10 mg once daily for 28 days. The 10-mg dose is provided by 2 inhalations (one 5-mg blister per inhalation).

Household 2 inhalations once daily for 10 days = 5 ROTADISKs[38]

Community 2 inhalations once daily for 28 days = 14 ROTADISKs[38]

Step 3:
Determine Single Pandemic Wave or More

In any given geographic region, each wave could last 3 to 5 months, and a second wave could appear anywhere from 1 to 3 months after the first disappears.[37]

Step 4:
Calculate

Example: If your organization employs 75 people and you’ll cover their families, the number of people to cover may be 300. Multiply 300 with 14 ROTADISKs (for prevention, or 5 for treatment) for a total of 4200. Multiply 4200 with the number of pandemic waves covered.

Important Safety Information About RELENZA

• Serious cases of bronchospasm, including fatalities, have been reported during treatment with RELENZA in patients with and without underlying airway disease. Many of these cases were reported during postmarketing, and causality was difficult to assess
  
• RELENZA SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED IN ANY PATIENT WHO DEVELOPS BRONCHOSPASM OR DECLINE IN RESPIRATORY FUNCTION; immediate treatment and hospitalization may be required
  
• Safety and efficacy have not been demonstrated in patients with high-risk underlying medical conditions
  
• Patients should be instructed in the use of the delivery system. Instructions should include a demonstration whenever possible
  
• If treatment with RELENZA is considered for a patient with underlying airway disease, the potential risks and benefits should be carefully weighed. If a decision is made to prescribe RELENZA for such a patient, this should be done only under conditions of careful monitoring of respiratory function, close observation, and appropriate supportive care including availability of fast-acting bronchodilators
  
• Common adverse events in treatment and prophylaxis studies with RELENZA were nausea, diarrhea, sinusitis, viral respiratory infections, headaches, nasal signs and symptoms. The incidence of these adverse events was similar in both groups for RELENZA and placebo-treated groups
